Global Swim Trends at Mode City

PARIS— had something for each of the eclectic international buyers who gathered from 113 different countries. The swimwear fashion shows ran every day of the Sept. 6–8 run of the Mode City trade show, held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in Paris.
Cutting-edge beachwear was grouped in scenes that depicted hip vacation destinations around the world. Representing the United States was the glittery day-to-nightclub looks of Miami. There was no such thing as too sexy or flashy as shown through the attentiongrabbing bikinis with sequin and metallic details, bright fluorescent colors and skimpy cutout designs.
Named after a beach in the Côte d’Azur region of southern France, the “La Madrague” trend showed the feminine side of swimwear. Vintage pinup styles in sweet, girly ginghams, seersucker and polka dots were topped off with lots of frilly ruffles, bows, ribbons and flower appliqués perfect for modern-day coquettes.
Sophisticated glamour encapsulated the “Porto Cervo” section, named for the Italian resort town. Chic one-piece suits in classic violet, coral, brown and black were key. Touches of modern ethnic-inspired prints and motifs in natural and understated hues added design interest to classic shapes.
Active, young and sporty kids characterized the “Cape Town” (South Africa) section. Athletic stripes in interesting combinations and geometric graphic prints were shown primarily in bright colors such as yellow, green and brown. Activewear staples such as running shorts, racer-back tanks and boardshorts in fresh color combinations and prints made a fashionable statement while being functional for skim boarding, beach volleyball or beach soccer.
On Sept 7, ABIT, Texbrasil, ApexBrasil and Brasil sponsored the “From Brazil” fashion show, which highlighted swimwear and lingerie from Brazilian brands Lenny, Salinas, Marajoara, Feriado Nacional, Mina D’Agua, Sol e Energia, Chris Coser, Poko Pano, Marcela Maciel Beachwear, Sol e Ondas, Chica Brasil, Sweet Cacau, Bia Brazil, CCM Sports and DelRio. The looks ranged from Lenny’s sexy avant-garde cutout suits to fashionable activewear leggings and track jackets by CCM Sports. —Rhea Cortado
